
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was born on July 31, 1965. Rowling was born in Gloucestershire, England. She studied French and Classics at Essector College. The second book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, remained at the top of the bestseller charts for a month after its release. With each new release since the third, she has continued to break the fastest-selling book record, becoming such a hit that it has become a social phenomenon around the world.
In 2000, she was awarded the Order of Merit for her contributions to children's literature. In her personal life, she remarried in 2001 and gave birth to a boy in 2003 and a girl in 2005.
After the Harry Potter series ended, she published a full-length novel for adults, "Casual Vacancy," in September 2012.
