"Art Aquarium," which attracted over 200,000 visitors last summer and allows visitors to appreciate schools of goldfish like three-dimensional art, will be held again this year from July 13th at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall. It will run until September 23rd.

The theme for this third event is "Edo - Coolness of Goldfish." The venue, which was produced by Hidetomo Kimura, a leading figure in "Art Aquarium," a term coined by combining "art" and "aquarium," displays 5,000 goldfish in a fantastical space illuminated with shifting lights of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. At a preview held on the 12th, prior to the opening, Kimura said, "The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred just as we were preparing for the first event, and there were various opinions regarding the event. However, 'visual coolness,' in other words, the ability to feel cool without electricity, is a wisdom that has been practiced in the Edo period since ancient times. The concept of the Art Aquarium matches this perfectly. Over 300,000 people visited the aquarium in the two years since last year, and this time we have added even more new works." He then performed the lighting ceremony. The new installation, titled "Ooku," consists of 14 goldfish bowls, arranged around a giant central goldfish bowl, as if they were being held in entourage. A new addition to the "Byoburium," a folding screen-shaped tank housing goldfish, is the "Kimonorium," a kimono-shaped aquarium. Project mapping creates a changing background, while goldfish resembling kimono patterns dance gracefully.
