Department stores announce December sales figures, with Hankyu Department Store's flagship store up 40.7% and Daimaru Tokyo up 23.4%

December sales figures for department stores were announced on January 4th. As previously reported, Isetan Mitsukoshi's sales were down 98% from the previous year. However, Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores and Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores secured increases, driven by the grand openings of expanded stores in October and November.
Hankyu Department Store's main store, which opened on November 21st, saw sales increase by 40.7% compared to the same month last year (including Hankyu Men's Osaka). This marks the second consecutive month of sales growth in the 140% range, following a 148.8% increase in November when the second phase building was completed on October 25th and 80% of the sales floor was open. Hanshin Department Store's sales were down 91.7% compared to the same month last year, 93.7% for all branches, and 110.0% for H2O Retailing (113.0% on an existing store basis excluding Kobe Hankyu).

J. Front Retailing's Daimaru Tokyo store, which had its grand opening in October with expanded floor space, was up 123.4% compared to the same month last year, the Daimaru Kobe store increased sales for the eighth consecutive month to 102.7%, and the Matsuzakaya Nagoya store was also performing strongly at 101.4%, but sales at other major stores were 97.2% at the Daimaru Umeda store, 95.1% at the Daimaru Shinsaibashi store, 97.6% at the Daimaru Kyoto store, and 90.9% at the Matsuzakaya Ginza store.
Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores as a whole was up 1% compared to the previous year, and the department store business as a whole was up 100.6%, exceeding year-on-year results for the fifth consecutive month.

At Takashimaya, sales of selected clothing and accessories, jewelry, etc. were strong and exceeded the previous year's figures, but food and women's clothing fell below the previous year's figures, so sales at 14 Takashimaya stores were 97.5% of the same month last year, and at 18 stores including subsidiaries, sales were 97.4%. By region, sales at 9 stores in the Kansai region were 98.1%, and at 9 stores in the Kanto region were 97.1%.
