Frank Gehry's Japan visit report: A look into the master's ideas and beliefs at Roppongi 21_21

Oct 21, 2015

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has opened the "Architect: Frank Gehry: I Have an Idea" exhibition. Focusing on the "ideas" of world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the exhibition explores his work and the man in five sections. The exhibition is directed by Tsuyoshi Tane, a renowned architect who was a finalist for the New National Stadium. Tane's fascinating approach unravels and introduces the man, Frank Gehry, who creates unique architecture that captivates and leaves a lasting impression, as well as his "ideas," showcasing models and building blocks he actually created and used, as well as his own words. The first section, "Gehry's Masterpieces," features projection mapping of Gehry's signature buildings, including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Louis Vuitton Foundation. The exhilaration of being immersed in this collaborative space, where Gehry's architecture appears on the walls of a venue designed by Tadao Ando, is a unique experience. The exhibition then continues with the "Gehry Room," displaying a model of Gehry's own home, objects that served as the raw material for his ideas, and Gehry's manifesto. The exhibition then continues with the core sections, "The Development of Ideas" and "The Realization of Ideas," and finally culminates in "Gehry's Secrets," showcasing rarely exhibited fish sketches and factory photographs by Gehry. When asked where his motivation to continue generating new ideas comes from, Frank Gehry once said, "All I want to do is come up with new ideas," Gehry responded, citing his friend Issey Miyake's creative approach as an example: "I trust my intuition. Continual evolution with consistency is connected to humanity, and it's a very personal thing that no one can imitate." Tane expressed Frank's use of "humanity" in Japanese as "human dignity." Ideas that connect to human dignity and the value of life have material weight, involve people, and move society forward.
This exhibition, which introduces Frank Gehry's ideas and the process by which they are realized, will inspire us in the "Age of Ideas," brought about by the desire and conviction to create the future.
