The LVMH Group's contemporary art museum, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, will open on October 27th in the Jardin d'Acclimatation in the northern Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
The Louis Vuitton Foundation is a foundation established for art and artists, with the aim of encouraging and promoting contemporary art in France and abroad. A facility of the same name will be born as a base for this. It was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, at the request of LVMH Group CEO Bernard Arnault.
The facade, inspired by yacht sails, features randomly overlapping curved glass panels, creating a cloud-like, floating appearance. Its undulating shape in one direction also resembles a living organism. Gehry, a pioneer of deconstructivist architecture, previously created the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall using three-dimensional metal surfaces, stunning visitors with their majestic architecture. The Louis Vuitton Foundation is an impactful building that fully showcases his creativity. It is sure to become a must-see attraction in Paris.
Interior galleries will be housed for permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and commissioned works by artists, as well as a multi-purpose hall for performances and events across multiple genres.
As part of the opening program, an exhibition will be held showcasing Gehry's architectural projects for the foundation. A related retrospective of Gehry's work, his first in Europe, will also be held in the same month at the Pompidou Center in Paris.
Construction of the facility was announced in 2006 and originally scheduled to open in 2010. Construction was completed this spring, and much anticipation was focused on the opening day.
