Fred Perry and Raf Simons release collaboration items inspired by London nightlife in the early '80s

May 14, 2021
British fashion brand Fred Perry is pleased to announce a collaboration with Raf Simons.

This season, the brand pays homage to the subculture that was born at London's legendary live music venue, the 100 Club, reinterpreting classic Fred Perry pieces by mixing them with decorations inspired by London's nightlife in the early 1980s, the design inspiration for Simons' original collection.

"The Fred Perry polo shirt has always existed in youth subculture."
Raf Simons

Between 1982 and 1983, avid gig-goer Brian Flynn used a pocket-sized Kodak camera to document his time with friends at the 100 Club on London's Oxford Street.

"I had just left school and was studying to become a real estate agent. I bought a camera with my first paycheck and started taking photos of my nights out. I sent it off to be developed at 8am, picked it up after work at 5pm, and selected the best photos to make a photo album that I still treasure to this day."

In this collection, patches printed with photos taken by Brian are sewn onto the t-shirts, just as fans would customize their own t-shirts before heading to a show. The collection's key piece, the white blazer, features handwritten lettering that embodies the punk spirit: "Another Land" and "Time is on our side." The 100% cotton overcoat features a printed patch, a badge on the collar, and Raf Simons' graphic signature on the chest. Always focused on youth culture, Raf Simons designed this collection with oversized pieces that allow for the wearer to express their identity and create free layering.

The Fred Perry x Raf Simons Spring & Summer 2021 collaboration items will be available on the Fred Perry official website (https://www.fredperry.jp/) from 5:00 PM on May 13, 2021, and at select Fred Perry stores, including Tokyo and Osaka, from May 14.

FRED PERRY
Founded in 1952 by triple Wimbledon champion Frederick John Perry, the brand has been a part of British subculture ever since. The original Fred Perry shirt was designed over 60 years ago and is proudly produced unchanged since then. The Fred Perry shirt is a subcultural uniform that crosses over from sportswear to streetwear. What inspired Fred also influenced other tennis players. It eventually inspired diverse communities, from unconventional youth rebelling against authority, to creatives such as musicians and filmmakers, and finally sports stars themselves. The uniform of British subculture, which dates back to the 1950s, has been worn by each generation as its own. But the laurel wreath on the chest has always been at its heart. It's an iconic shirt that's instantly recognizable whether you're in another room, a crowded dance floor, or a vast football stadium. With a unique sports background and deep ties to British subculture, the British fashion brand has expanded its business globally, collaborating with world-renowned designers like Raf Simons and British designers whose work is rooted in subculture.
