Photographer Risaku Suzuki holds his first large-scale solo exhibition in about eight years. Showing "seeing" through reliving the gaze

Jul 10, 2015

Photographer Risaku Suzuki's solo exhibition, "Suzuki Risaku Photography: Stream of Consciousness," will be held at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery from July 18th through September 23rd.
Born in Wakayama in 1963, Risaku Suzuki began using photography as a medium in the mid-1980s. His photographs, including his first photobook, "KUMANO" (1998), themed on his hometown of Kumano, were highly praised for their continuous photographic techniques and narrative expression, and in 2000 he won the 25th Kimura Ihei Photography Award. While making Kumano his life's work, he has continued to capture a variety of subjects, from Mont Sainte-Victoire in southern France to Cézanne's studio, cherry blossoms, and snow, using different approaches. He has expanded his international reach, holding solo exhibitions in New York in 2006 and Zurich in 2011. The exhibition's title, "Stream of Consciousness," is inspired by Suzuki's own experience: "When I surrender to the act of looking, random memories and various thoughts emerge, eventually resulting in a single, surging emotion." As Suzuki says, "I want to present the act of seeing itself," his photographs are characterized by an abstract, non-descriptive style that appeals to the senses and the visual sense. Viewers will relive Suzuki's gaze as they view the photographs, and be drawn further into the pure act of "seeing." This exhibition, Suzuki's first large-scale solo exhibition in approximately eight years since 2007, will feature approximately 100 photographs, primarily new and unpublished works, as well as three video works. The three video works were shot with a digital camera, an area Suzuki has been interested in in recent years. The composition of still photographs, moving images, and stills from moving images reveals Suzuki's experimental spirit regarding "seeing" and "the time spent looking."
