The "New World" Captured by World-Renowned Photographer Wolfgang Tillmans [Shelf Recommended Book]

Jul 25, 2015

Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Today, we'll be introducing books selected by Shelf (3-7-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), a Harajuku bookshop specializing in foreign books.

■ "Neue Welt" by Wolfgang Tillmans

This book features images of people and landscapes captured by Wolfgang Tillmans, a world-renowned photographer and Turner Prize winner, as he traveled with his digital camera from London to Nottingham, then to Tasmania, and on to Chile, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, India, China, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Argentina.

"We are essentially confined to reading the truth of things from the surface of the world, which is why I find surfaces and superficial layers so intriguing," says Wolfgang Tillmans. The title "New World" not only has political and economic connotations, but also refers to the new visual world that has been opened up by the development of the digital camera.

From July 25th to September 23rd, Western Japan's first large-scale solo exhibition, "Wolfgang Tillmans: Your Body is Yours," will be held at the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
