RAIKA, a café located on the 5th floor Living Floor of Isetan Shinjuku Main Building, offers a variety of meals and desserts made with plenty of seasonal fruit. They've introduced a new shaved ice menu perfect for the hot summer.
Raika's shaved ice is made with natural ice from Mount Fuji, shaved to a fluffy, snow-capped peak. The ice is topped with a syrup packed with the flavor of carefully selected fruits and sprinkled with fresh, juicy fruit, making it a truly luxurious shaved ice for adults. In addition to the existing flavors of lemon and mango, new flavors this summer include peach, plum, and pineapple.
The cafe's most popular item, peach (1,600 yen), is a fresh flavor made with white peach, which is in season. The smooth, melting ice fills your mouth with the gentle sweetness of the peach. The refreshing lemon (1,450 yen) features a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness from the lemon syrup. Meanwhile, the "Pineapple" (1,500 yen) and "Mango" (1,728 yen including tax), which preserve the rich color of ripe fruit in syrup, are surprisingly sweet and juicy. The "Plum" (1,500 yen), a novel choice for shaved ice, offers a sophisticated taste with a balance of sweet and sour. All of the fruit used in the shaved ice is sourced from specialty fruit shops, resulting in a flavor that will have you coming back for more than one summer. Yuka Kuroda, food coordinator at "Raikan," explains, "The secret to the deliciousness of our rich syrup is that we don't use any water, but extract it only from the juice of the fruit. For each serving of shaved ice, we use the equivalent of about one whole fruit for the syrup and toppings." Even down to the tableware and interior design, "Raikan" is particular about using "quality Japanese products." The shaved ice bowl with a slit design is from HIROY GLASS STUDIO, a glassblowing studio in Okayama. The bowl features a cool motif that replicates the vertical latticework known as "renko," which is found on the doors and windows of Japanese houses.
Other menu items available include a "Summer Parfait" filled with delicious summer fruits, and a "Peach Parfait" that lets you enjoy the lavish taste of seasonal fruits, so we hope you enjoy the changing seasons that are unique to Japan.
