■Thanks to those who eat. Thanks to those who grow.
MUJI aims to be a store that is useful to consumers through its products and services. The daily activities of clothing, food, and shelter are closely related and cannot be thought of separately, with food being at the heart of these. However, for urban dwellers, the fields, farms, and fishing grounds where food is produced are distant, and food is simply consumed as a commodity. The reality is that for many products, attention is focused only on the name and price, with little knowledge of the producers' passion and the many ingenious ideas that went into them. MUJI Konandai Birds will further expand on our existing food initiatives, aiming to become a place that fosters connections and exchanges between people, not only conveying the passion of producers but also allowing customers' voices to reach producers.
Boasting the largest sales floor in the Kanto region, the store will stock basic MUJI products necessary for daily life, and will promote initiatives based on four themes: "Food and Agriculture," "Resource Recycling," "Lifestyle Support," and "Urban Development," with the aim of becoming a presence that will be useful to local residents for a long time.
"Food and Agriculture"
(1) Initiatives for Local Production and Consumption
By directly connecting with producers, we will offer a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, focusing on local ingredients, unique to MUJI.
Along with explaining the background of ingredients that become obscured during distribution, we will share wisdom learned from producers, such as simple cooking methods that make the most of the ingredients, storage methods that reduce food waste, and tips for eating every last drop. In addition to coexisting with the local community and connecting producers with dining tables, we will also spread the joy of food by suggesting recipes that support health.
(2) Collaboration with Food Partners
The large food specialty section, which will be the core of this store, which is closely connected to local life, will be operated by MI Food Style Co., Ltd. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Ryuichi Amemiya), which operates Queen's Isetan. Based on the theme of local production for local consumption, the section offers a wide variety of products that make use of the unique characteristics of the region, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, mainly from Kanagawa Prefecture, traditional local vegetables, meat, groceries, and prepared dishes. In addition, Nakajima Suisan Co., Ltd. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Akira Nakajima), a fresh fish specialty store that has been contributing to the realization of "people's health" and "a rich food culture" by continuing to provide "delicious fish" since its founding in 1925, will open a store there.
(3) Kitchen Counter: A Crossroads of Delicious Wisdom
This is a space where registered dietitians, food education advisors, producers, and local residents can exchange their wisdom and have fun teaching and learning from each other, with a focus on the theme of "food." Utilizing the open kitchen, we will livestream dishes that make the most of local ingredients and provide recipes. This is a first for MUJI.
- Live video streaming
With more people eating at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will broadcast live footage of the kitchen counter on in-store monitors and simultaneously stream it on Instagram. For event information, please check the in-store bulletin board or MUJI passport.
- Development and distribution of original recipes
To help customers enjoy healthy everyday meals, we will work with experts such as registered dietitians and food education advisors to develop and distribute original recipes that incorporate MUJI food products and fresh local ingredients.

[Resource Recycling]
Environmental Initiatives
Aiming for a better relationship with nature, MUJI is starting with what it can do to recycle the world's resources and reduce waste.
- [Food Loss Reduction] Food Sold by Weight
As the amount of food eaten and used varies from person to person and at different times, we will begin selling food by weight to meet the "just right" needs of each individual. Approximately 30 types of food, including coffee, nuts, and dried fruit, will be sold in 1-gram increments, starting from 20 grams or more, one piece at a time, the smallest single-serving unit, proposing a "compact food lifestyle" in which people do not own more than they need.
・[Reducing Plastic Waste] Water Refill Service
We have installed water refill machines in two locations within the store with the aim of using drinking water as an opportunity to think about the environment and health together with our customers. This water refill service uses tap water and is available free of charge to anyone who purchases a "self-fillable water bottle" in-store or brings their own bottle.
[Lifestyle Support]
(1) MUJI SUPPORT
The "MUJI SUPPORT" consultation counter on the first floor, under the theme of "MUJI Support for Growing Together with the City," will offer a variety of services to address each individual's concerns and help organize their lives, in addition to existing services such as storage consultations. Whether you're living alone and need help organizing your belongings, or your family has changed and you want to rethink your interior to suit your lifestyle, our specialized staff (interior advisors) will visit you in your home to directly address any concerns you may have.
(2) Same-Day Food Delivery Service
We will be rolling out a same-day delivery service for products purchased in the specialty food section. This shopping support service responds to customer feedback, such as wanting to be able to check the product in person before making a purchase and being hesitant to carry it to their home.
[Urban Development]
(1) Collaboration with the Government
MUJI's goal of creating a "comfortable life and society" is not something we can achieve alone. By collaborating in the four areas of "food and agriculture," "resource circulation," "lifestyle support," and "urban revitalization," we will identify local issues based on the everyday problems we gather through our daily activities and develop a system for solving them together.
In addition to contributing to urban development, we aim to create "vibrant, safe, and sustainable towns" by engaging with the local community through our stores.
(2) Holding a "Connecting Market"
We will collaborate with local people from a variety of fields to hold market sales and events. We are considering holding events that will connect producers, consumers, eaters and makers, with a focus on the theme of "food."
