■ "GENESIS" by Sebastiao Salgado
Sebastiao Salgado is a world-renowned photojournalist and environmental activist known for his dedication to preserving and restoring nature. While Salgado has always focused on capturing humanity and confronting the dark side of war, refugees, genocide, and human frailty, this book marks a shift in his style as he presents his "GENESIS" project, a project he has been working on since 2004.
This project involved Salgado repeatedly traveling to Galapagos, Alaska, the Sahara Desert, and tropical rainforests, where the Earth's "unvarnished state" remains. By capturing the untouched beauty of nature and the primitive lifestyles of the people who live there, detached from modern society, the project has rekindled reflections on modern-day global environmental issues and our connection to human society.
"GENESIS" is my love letter to the Earth," says Salgado. It is a prayer of hope from a photographer who has continued to examine the deep darkness of humanity. The book conveys a deep prayer with every turn of the page.
"Sebastião Salgado / A Love Letter to the Earth" will be screened at Bunkamura Le Cinema from August 1st. Director Wim Wenders, who has produced many outstanding documentaries, enlists the help of Salgado's eldest son, filmmaker Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, to unravel the turbulent footsteps of a man who loved his family.
