The main window of the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store is showcasing artwork by art director and graphic designer Yoshida Yuni, based on the work of ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, until August 24th.
The artwork was created as part of the "2015 Mitsukoshi Art & Creation" project, in which Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, which bills itself as a "culture resort department store," focuses on Japanese culture and art and proposes "living with art" throughout the store. The store is focusing on Katsushika Hokusai, whose work continues to fascinate people, and is hosting various events using the 15 volumes and approximately 4,000 drawings of "Hokusai Manga."
A collaborative art piece is on display in the large window facing the street on the first floor of the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. Yoshida Yuni's innovative sensibility is combined with the "time" of Edo as captured by Katsushika Hokusai. Yoshida Uni has worked on advertisements for stage productions by Noda Hideki, the visuals for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO, and CD jackets for artists like Kimura Kaela and Chara. In this work, Yoshida's unique perspective on Hokusai's worldview is reconstructed through eye-catching, impactful designs with meticulous attention to detail. Furthermore, from August 12th to 18th, the central hall on the first floor of the main building will be selling original Hokusai Manga drawings, as well as hosting events where visitors can experience modern-day techniques and craftsmanship, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of Hokusai's time.
