Starting in December, MUJI will be selling a special edition of the popular "E60 Stool" chair from Finnish interior brand Artek.
Alvar Aalto, one of the most representative architects of the 20th century, held the modernist philosophy of wanting to popularize superior design that combined functionality and practicality, rather than designing for a specific individual. Among his designs, the "E60 Stool," created in 1933, is manufactured at the Artek factory in Finland using the "L-leg" method, a technique that has remained unchanged for over 80 years. Crafted from sturdy Finnish wood, the unique method of bending solid wood into an L-shape ensures this stool can be used for many years, and it continues to be loved by people around the world, transcending borders and cultures.
The newly released "Birch Stool (E60)" (24,900 yen) is a special model that was born after two years of exploration with MUJI, with the hope that this stool will become a part of even more Japanese homes and become a part of Japanese life. Unlike the conventional "E60 Stool," which is treated with paint or other processes, this stool simplifies the process of selecting materials by using the wood's knots and dark grain as its unique character. In addition, laminate, which is usually used on the underside of the seat, has been deliberately used on the front side without any top coating.
It is available at 12 MUJI stores nationwide and online.
