The Roppongi Hills Christmas Market 2016 is being held at the O-Yane Plaza in Roppongi Hills through December 25th. The period from around December 1st to Christmas Day is called "Advent," and in Germany, it's customary to purchase Christmas items at Christmas markets and other venues to prepare for the holiday. This event recreates the authentic Stuttgart Christmas market, said to be the world's largest. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the market, and each store will be offering special menus and original products to commemorate the 10th anniversary. Over 1,000 varieties of Christmas goods will be available, as well as authentic German cuisine like sausages and pretzels. Käthe Wohlfahrt, a popular German store selling Christmas items year-round, is offering a reindeer version of its wildly popular egg-shaped incense doll, "Smoky," for ¥5,300. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, they're running a 10% discount on purchases of four or more original wooden ornaments. Joy Luck Club, offering handmade glasswork featuring delicate and adorable designs, is offering a special set of two "Angel Bells" (756 yen), featuring a transparent angel on top, for 1,000 yen. Advent Shop From Germany, offering placemats, paper napkins, ornaments, and other items to brighten up your Christmas table, will be selling an original advent calendar (1,000 yen) to commemorate its 10th anniversary. Original Snow Globe, which creates snow globes filled with crystal clear Alpine water and delicate snow that continues to fall for a long time, will be selling an original photo book (2,000 yen). Rasp Spice Decoration, offering wreaths and ornaments made from spices such as cinnamon and cloves, will be releasing a set featuring an angel holding a musical instrument and a brass stand decorated with spices (3,900 yen). In addition, restaurants offering authentic German cuisine will be offering special menus to commemorate their 10th anniversary. Weihnachtanne, which offers Christmas bread and baked goods handmade using traditional German methods, will release "Pear Brot" (1,000 yen) and "Pretzel Cookies" (200 yen), menu items that they have been considering commercializing for many years. Konig, which handcrafts traditional ham and sausages using Japanese ingredients after learning about them in Germany, will sell "Currywurst" (1,000 yen), made with 100% Yonezawa beef and seasoned with original spices.
Other items include Kaiser Grill, which serves German beer directly from Germany and spicy mulled wine, and a set of high-quality prosciutto and sparkling wine (1,000 yen). Zugspitze, where you can enjoy beer directly from Germany and mulled wine with fried mushrooms, will offer a glass commemorating the 500th anniversary of the German Beer Pure Border Law (1,500 yen). Cafe Markus Bosch, run by a German chef, will offer a special takeout Christmas set, while German Hot Stand 2016, where you can enjoy smoked turkey, hot dogs, and more with authentic mulled wine (cinnamon sticks), will offer a "Seven Cheese Dog" (700 yen). Also, in keeping with the authentic German custom of drinking hot mulled wine from a custom mug sold at each market, original mugs (750 yen) with a limited-edition 10th anniversary design will be on sale during the event. Additionally, the "Fir Tree Shop" will open on the first floor of Hillside. Find your favorite from a variety of fresh fir trees, large and small, and decorate them with ornaments purchased at the Christmas market to create your own Christmas tree. Santa Claus will also be making an appearance around town on December 23rd, 24th, and 25th, further enhancing the Christmas atmosphere.
