British artist Ian Berry creates his works using groundbreaking methods. At first glance, his works resemble blue-toned photographs or indigo oil paintings, but in fact, they are all made entirely from denim.
The creative process is simple: he simply cuts and glues pieces of denim together. Ian explains that the beauty of his work cannot be conveyed through a photograph or computer screen. Seeing his work up close and in person allows you to appreciate its depth and texture. You can also see how he meticulously and thoughtfully uses the washes and shades of the jeans to achieve the photographic tones. Because denim is an urban material, it's ideal for depicting scenes from urban life.
Ian came up with this technique after noticing the contrast between the different shades of blue in a pile of jeans. He has used it to create numerous works. He has received widespread acclaim for his work, which ranges from portraits of famous people such as Debbie Harry of the rock band Blondie, fashion designer Giorgio Armani, and Formula One racer Ayrton Senna to collections of everyday scenes.
In November 2016, he held an exhibition, "Behind Closed Doors," in London. Ian hopes to hold an exhibition in Japan as well, so it may not be long before you have a chance to see his works in person.
