A wall-to-wall dartboard! A Swedish artist's installation that involves audience participation

Oct 31, 2016

Jacob Dahlgren, a Stockholm-based artist, continues to create original, abstract works using everyday objects. His installation "I, The World, Thing, Life," which he has been working on since 2004, is a unique piece using darts. The technique is simple, but the strange, psychedelic sight of dartboards affixed to an entire wall is enough to stop you in your tracks.

The installation is interactive, inviting visitors to throw darts from a box placed on the floor at the wall. The concept of this work, created with the aim of creating a giant, abstract painting that appears to be constantly moving, is brought to completion by the countless darts thrown.

Jacob explains that while it is easy to aim at a single dartboard, placing many boards next to each other creates an optical pattern, creating the illusion of the boards moving, making it more difficult to aim. This installation has apparently been held in various parts of the world, including Canada, Finland and Spain. As an aside, Jacob is a collector of striped T-shirts, and on his Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/jacob_dahlgren/) he uploads images of himself wearing a different T-shirt from his collection every day, which is a heartwarming sight and also very worth seeing.
