British publisher MACK's fifth anniversary event, "MACK CONCEPT TOKYO," will be held at the IMA CONCEPT STORE in Roppongi, Tokyo, from April 5th to 23rd.
MACK was founded in the UK in 2011 by Michael Mack, who served as managing director of the art and photobook division of the venerable German publisher Steidl for approximately 15 years and published over 300 titles. MACK has released works by a wide range of artists, from renowned artists such as Thomas Demand and Alec Soth to unknown artists who have never published a photobook before, and has gained a global following as a leading publisher in the modern publishing industry.
The fifth anniversary event will also feature a pop-up bookshop called "MACK x USM Modular Furniture," a collaboration with Swiss luxury furniture manufacturer USM Modular Furniture. Approximately 80 titles published by MACK to date, as well as special edition books, will be on sale. Additionally, three Japanese photobooks will be released simultaneously, ahead of the rest of the world. The lineup includes "THE NARCISSISTIC CITY" (9,000 yen) by Takashi Homma, which depicts a city steeped in self-absorption; "TRANSPARENCY IS THE NEW MYSTERY" (5,800 yen), a collection of 22 nude and crystal photographs by Mayumi Hosokura; and "HIBI" (8,300 yen) by Masahisa Fukase, who photographed cracks in the ground along his daily commute, burned them onto prints, and then colored each one himself. The venue will also host a "MACK EXHIBITION," an exhibition featuring the three artists. Other events include an anniversary party featuring MACK director Michael Mack, presentations by Michael Mack and each artist, and a book signing. POST in Ebisu will also be hosting an exhibition titled "Beyond Maps and Atlases" by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen, who has published numerous photo books with MACK.
