To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of the nationally beloved newspaper comic "Sazae-san," the "Selections of Hasegawa Machiko" exhibition will be held at the "Eki" Kyoto Museum of Art in Kyoto from April 28th to May 22nd, focusing on its creator, Hasegawa Machiko.
Blessed with artistic talent from a young age, Hasegawa Machiko, the creator of "Sazae-san," became an apprentice to Tagawa Suiho at age 14 and debuted the following year as Japan's first female manga artist. She has captivated many audiences with her timeless humor and the exceptional artistic ability to express it.
With the full cooperation of the Hasegawa Machiko Museum of Art, this exhibition will explore the life of Hasegawa Machiko, a cherished figure in the cultural history of the Showa era, and her hidden, rich creative world, divided into five chapters. Chapter 1, "The 15-Year-Old Genius," will showcase her work prior to "Sazae-san." Her debut work, her wartime work, and her first newspaper serialization will be displayed through rare printed publications and panels. Chapter 2, "Sazae-san Appears!", showcases her popularity through 100 carefully selected original drawings, reproductions of the publications, and paperbacks. Chapter 3, "Mean Grandma," introduces other manga works besides "Sazae-san," including "Mean Grandma," a character with a strong personality yet somehow lovable.
Next, Chapter 4, "Machiko's Picture Books," displays original illustrations from picture books such as "Animal Picture Books," which have been connected since before the war, and "Sazae-san Picture Books" and "Machiko Picture Books," which are linked to the manga. Chapter 5, "Confessions," introduces "Sazae-san Confessions," an autobiographical essay with comics that was written in response to the increasing association between Machiko and Sazae-san. Commemorative merchandise for the exhibition will also be on sale at the venue.
