First large comet in 20 years, "Comet Ison" observation event held at Roppongi Hills Main Observatory

Sep 17, 2013

A December observation event for the great comet "Comet ISON" will be held at the Roppongi Astronomical Club in Tokyo City View, Roppongi Hills. The event will take place on the Sky Deck on the rooftop of Mori Tower, Japan's tallest open-air observation deck. The event will coincide with Comet ISON's perihelion, and will run for three days from December 6th to 8th, the best time to observe it.

Like the PanSTARRS Comet that made headlines in March of this year, Comet ISON is thought to have only approached the Sun once and never returned. While the 1997 Hale-Bopp Comet is said to have been the most widely observed comet of the 20th century, Comet ISON is expected to be an exceptionally bright comet that will be visible for the first time in 20 years.

The observation event will begin at 4:00 AM. The actual viewing of Comet ISON will begin at 5:00 AM for approximately 30 minutes. During the rest of the day, participants will join astronomy experts in observing Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, and the winter constellations. The capacity is 300 people per day, and the participation fee is 3,500 yen. Applications will be accepted on the Tokyo City View official website from October 1st to November 15th.

In addition, on November 22nd and 29th, there will be an "Explanatory Seminar on Comet Ison and the Winter Stars." Star sommelier Izumi Tomohiro will be the lecturer, and you can learn more about Comet Ison. Applications for this seminar will also begin being accepted from October 1st. The capacity is 50 people per day, and the fee is 2,000 yen.
