The "Stories of the Sparkle that Adorned Women: The World of Antique Jewelry and Watches" exhibition is running until June 22nd at the Mikimoto Hall on the 6th floor of the Mikimoto flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo. The exhibition features approximately 150 pieces from a private collection, dating from the 1850s to the 1930s. The exhibit features decorative timepieces, such as pearl watch sets, designed to be discreetly peered at, in an era when it was considered impolite for women to check the time publicly, as well as jewelry reflecting the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Furthermore, after World War I, when 10 million people were killed in combat, women's everyday items began to become more decorative. These are known as "necessaires." The exhibition also features a collection of "necessaires," including handbags decorated with beads and sequins, and lacquered pens and trinket cases.
