The MIKIMOTO flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo (located at 4-5-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will close in mid-January 2015, and construction will begin for a grand reopening in March 2017. During this construction, MIKIMOTO GINZA 2 (located at 2-4-12 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will temporarily operate as the flagship store. The current store, completed in 1974, has been in operation for 40 years. With an eye toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the new building will be renovated to accommodate domestic and international customers, creating a building worthy of a MIKIMOTO flagship store. The sales floor will be approximately 2.5 times larger than the current size, with 12 floors above ground and two below, reaching a height of 56 meters, the maximum allowed by the Ginza District Planning Rules. The facade design was handled by Hiroshi Naito, an architect and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. "We want to create a beautiful facade that will captivate passersby, unlike anything else in the world. We want to express the 'glow of spring,'" Naito said. The aim is to create a Ginza landmark that blends into the streetscape while maintaining the brand's sense of luxury.
Mikimoto opened its flagship store in Ginza in 1899 as Japan's first pearl specialty store. In 1906, it moved to its current location, and the store, housed in a white stone Western-style building, was nicknamed the "pearl-colored store." After undergoing more than five renovations and reconstructions, the current building was completed in 1974. The interior was renovated in 1990, and a cultural event hall and VIP reception salon were added.
