On September 18th, FACTOTUM presented its 2014 Spring/Summer collection at Yoyogi National Gymnasium No. 2. Designer Koji Udo created the theme "Uusi Aalto," which means "new wave" in Finnish. The collection was inspired by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto's philosophy of "always learning new things." While traveling in Finland, Udo was captivated by the university Alvar attended and the campuses he designed, and conducted research with "school" as the keyword. The collection offered men's and women's styles inspired by the sporty aesthetic of the late 1960s and 1970s. The collection began with a long coat and pants combination featuring vertical brick-colored stripes, symbolizing Alvar's "Red Period," in which he made extensive use of red brick. Wave-patterned graphic pieces were then introduced. A number of styles, mixing gray and white, expressed Alvar's signature soft light. The final collection featured a line of dresses, all made light and comfortable to wear. For the finale, all the models wore school looks, combining white shirts with shorts or skirts and ties, to close the show. Items evocative of "school" such as sneakers, knee-high socks, sweatshirts, and varsity jackets appeared throughout the collection. "We're living in an age where a new wave is coming. With changes in the economy, politics, and the way men and women think, I wanted to express gender-free ideas in this show," said Arimoto.
