On its official website, "Inside Chanel" (inside-chanel.com), CHANEL presents a short film about the life of founding designer Gabrielle Chanel and the creations that have shaped the brand's history. Chapter 6 is titled "Mademoiselle." Chanel, nicknamed "Coco," began calling herself "Mademoiselle" around 1920. Around that time, she developed friendships with artists such as Cocteau, Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Ravel, and Picasso, traveled to Venice and England, and developed friendships with Grand Duke Dimitri and the Duke of Westminster. It was during this time that she encountered the luxurious culture of the Slavs and Byzantines and the material tweed, which led to the creation of No. 5 perfume, the little black dress, and costume jewelry. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Mademoiselle closed her boutique on Rue Cambon.
