Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s "Nissan Art Award 2015" exhibition will be held from November 14 to December 27 at BankART Studio NYK in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The "Nissan Art Award" was launched in 2013, the 80th anniversary of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s founding, with the aim of supporting the work of outstanding Japanese artists in the contemporary art world and helping to foster the development of Japanese culture for future generations. This year, for the second time, art professionals, including curators, researchers, art space operators, residency program staff, and NPOs, nominated artists. In June of this year, a five-member international judging committee, based around the world, selected seven finalists from the 33 nominees through a document review process.
The seven artists will present new works in a variety of genres, including installation, sculpture, video, and photography. Sayaka Akiyama, who has lived in various places and creates works that reflect the "footprints of time" sewn into each stitch based on her experiences there, will exhibit works that express her memories of a two-and-a-half-month stay in Yokohama. Takahiro Iwasaki, who reconstructs everyday scenes such as steel towers and construction sites, as well as historical buildings such as Itsukushima Shrine and Kinkaku-ji Temple, as sculptures, has created intricate architectural landscapes using everyday objects and cypress. Futoshi Miyagi, whose works explore themes such as nationality, race, and identity through photography, video, objects, and text, will expand on his "American Boyfriend" project, which he has been working on since 2012, and will exhibit footage shot in Okinawa and the United States. Other exhibits include an installation by Takeshi Hisakado that incorporates the space, sound, and light of the venue, BankART, into his work; Takashi Ishida's dynamic spatial work that combines painting and video; Yuko Mori's installation using everyday objects and machines; and Tomoko Yoneda's photographic works that capture historical traces based on her meticulous fieldwork in the UK and Japan. In addition, artist talks will be held by the finalists on November 14th, 21st, and 22nd. A talk show by the Grand Prize winner will also be held on November 28th.
The Grand Prize winner will be decided on November 24th after displaying their work at the exhibition and following a final judging. In addition to a prize of 3 million yen, the Grand Prize winner will be offered the opportunity to stay in London for two months with the cooperation of Camden Arts Centre, London's historic art center.
