Rinko Kawauchi's photo exhibition at Gucci Shinjuku. A nomination from new creative director Alessandro.

Nov 25, 2015

Photographer Kawauchi Rinko's "Let's sing a song our bodies know" exhibition is currently being held at the Gucci Shinjuku 3rd Floor Event Space (3-26-11 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo). It runs until December 13th. Kawauchi's encounter with Gucci began with a fashion shoot for the magazine "Numero." The magazine's project was realized when Kawauchi was personally selected by Gucci's new creative director, Alessandro Michele. Now, upon receiving her second offer from Gucci, Kawauchi has created a spatial installation centered around newly shot works specifically for this exhibition. Her collected photographs and video installations are displayed across the walls of the venue, which is intentionally laid out in a simple, horizontal layout. Additionally, a variety of photographs are displayed on the floor as light boxes. Of course, Kawauchi herself devised the exhibition method. "Because the venue offered a great deal of freedom, I wanted to try something that wouldn't be possible in a museum or gallery, where placement is limited," Kawauchi said. Regarding the photographs arranged on the floor, she expressed her hope that visitors would "feel like they're looking down on the earth from God's perspective." Furthermore, the exhibition interweaves still and moving images, allowing visitors to enjoy not only gliding their gaze in the direction of travel, but also darting their gaze back and forth. By viewing the entire exhibition as a single work, visitors can appreciate "light," one of Kawauchi's distinctive photographic qualities, from various angles. Kawauchi herself has said, "Different reflections of light change the way we see things." When asked how she perceives light, she immediately responded, "It's like a symbol of hope for life." When combined with her statement, "Every time I take a photograph, I think about why I was struck by the urge to photograph what's in front of me," it seems that for Kawauchi, taking photographs is life itself.

Furthermore, when asked if there were any similarities between the new Gucci and his own creations, he revealed that he strongly sympathizes with Alessandro's worldview, saying, "We both often use nature as motifs, but Alessandro's expressions are bolder. Because we use the same motifs, I sometimes realize that there are different ways of looking at things."
