The "MIYAKE ISSEY: The Work of Miyake Issey" exhibition will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo from March 16 to June 13, 2016.
The exhibition showcases the work of designer Miyake Issey over the past 45 years, spanning from 1970, when he began his career, to the present. It is divided into three main rooms. Room A displays clothing from the 1970s, which could be considered the origins of Miyake Issey. This includes a jumpsuit featuring tattoo designs, which was released in the Spring/Summer 1971 collection, a handkerchief dress made from three square pieces of bias-weave fabric, and a cocoon coat made from a single piece of fabric.
Room B displays a series of garments focusing on the body, a core work from the 1980s. These include "body" garments that cover the torso, incorporating materials not traditionally used in clothing, such as fiber-reinforced plastic, synthetic fibers, and rattan. Room C presents Miyake Issey's most innovative aspects, "starting from the fabric," divided into themes. The production process of Miyake's "product pleating," in which fabric is cut and sewn into the shape of clothing and then pleated, will also be on display for the first time.
The venue and visual design for Room C was handled by Taku Satoh. Additionally, the spatial design for Rooms A and B was handled by Tokuhito Yoshioka, and the exhibition will feature a "Grid Body" designed specifically for this exhibition.
