"Like a Road on Earth," a large-scale solo exhibition by renowned Korean contemporary artist Jeong Yong-du, will open November 8th at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture. The exhibition will feature Jeong's works, from his earliest to most recent, including "Six Points," a video work that utilizes the unique characteristics of neighborhoods where immigrants from various countries live; "Everyday Paradise," which uses video tricks to transform familiar cityscapes into otherworldly worlds; and "Drive-In Theater," an experiential video installation that allows viewers to feel like they're characters in a film. The exhibition also includes a video based on photographs taken by Kenji Shiratori, a blind masseuse Jeong met in Mito; a new work using the Oculus Rift, a headset monitor that allows users to experience virtual reality through 3D images; and a video set in Mito featuring illusion artist Lee Eun-gyeol and jazz pianist Makoto Ozone. The title of the exhibition is a quote from a passage in Lu Xun's short story "Hometown," and the exhibition questions the meaning of memory, forgetting, and hope through new visual experiences and witty video works.
Jeong was born in Jinju, South Korea in 1969 and is an artist living in Seoul. In 2007, he became the youngest person to receive the Korea Artist of the Year Award, and has exhibited works based on the dreams and memories of ordinary people at venues such as the Venice and Shanghai Biennales, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Art Center, Tokyo.
