Musician Salyu was born on October 13, 1980, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. While attending elementary school, she was a member of a girls' choir, and upon entering high school, she auditioned for Sony Music. She eventually began attending the label's singing training institute, further honing her talent as a singer. Music producer Takeshi Kobayashi took notice of her. She was hired as the vocalist for "Lily Chou-Chou," a unit linked to the 2001 film "All About Lily Chou-Chou." In 2000, she released the single "Glide" ahead of the film's release. Following the film's release, she released the album "Breathing," which included songs used in the film, and the unit disbanded. Later, in 2003, one of the album's tracks, "Healing Wounds," was used in Tarantino's "Kill Bill." After Lily Chou-Chou disbanded, Salyu focused on live performances until 2004, when she released the single "VALON" with ILMARI of RIP SLYME. This was her debut as Salyu, and the following year she released her first solo album, "landmark." In 2006, she wrote lyrics for Hitoto Yo for the single "Tower," and joined Bank Band to release their first single, "to U," attracting attention from the media. In 2007, her second album, "TERMINAL," reached number two on the Oricon weekly chart and was certified gold. In 2008, she held her first live concert at the Budokan and released the greatest hits album, "Merkmal." In 2010, she released her self-produced album, "MAIDEN VOYAGE." In 2011, she launched the "salyu x salyu" project and released the collaborative album "s(o)un(d)beams" with Keigo Oyamada of CORNELIUS.
