The largest-ever Baccarat chandelier and illuminations will light up Yebisu Garden Place in winter.

Oct 20, 2014

Yebisu Garden Place will host a collaborative event with Baccarat, "Baccarat ETERNAL LIGHTS -Shapes of Joy."

This event celebrates the 20th anniversary of the opening of Yebisu Garden Place and the 250th anniversary of Baccarat's founding. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the event, and in addition to displaying a chandelier in the Center Plaza, the entire Garden Place will be illuminated with lights.

The chandelier on display in the Center Plaza is a collaboration between Baccarat and designer Yasumichi Morita of the interior design firm "GLAMOROUS." The 8.4m-tall, 4.6m-wide piece features 410 LED lights. It features 26,471 crystal pieces, making it the largest in Baccarat's history.

Since introducing France's first crystal chandelier in 1827, Baccarat has created a wide variety of works. In 1855, it was exhibited at the Paris World's Fair, where it won a gold medal. This chandelier combines 17 of two types of chandeliers: the "Zenith," a splendid design from the era of candlelight, and the "Solstice," with its cascading teardrop-like form. The chandeliers are displayed in 12.2-meter-tall aluminum cases. This is equivalent to a 3.5-story building. To support the chandelier's weight and its weight of 1.8 tons, a "lattice panel" system is used, successfully increasing the rigidity of the case. The color scheme has also been changed from the traditional silver to black, further enhancing the chandelier's beauty. Meanwhile, the illuminations will feature approximately 100,000 electric lights. The entrance pavilion, Clock Square, the sloped promenade, Center Square, and Château Square will be dazzlingly lit up. A tree will be set up in Clock Square, and various Christmas-themed events will also be held.

An opening ceremony and a lighting ceremony for the chandeliers and illuminations will be held on November 8th. The event will run until January 12th.
