Yuki Iiyama's "Become a Moomin Family and Go to Meet the Sea Kannon" Exhibition in Ebisu

Sep 11, 2014

From September 13th to October 19th, the gallery "waitingroom" (2-8-11 Ebisu Nishi, Shibuya-ku) in the Ebisu/Daikanyama area will be hosting Yuki Iiyama's solo exhibition "Searching for Your True Home / Becoming a Moomin Family and Going to Meet the Kannon of the Sea."

This exhibition with its mysterious title marks Iiyama's debut solo exhibition at "waitingroom," and she is a young artist who just graduated from the Department of Oil Painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013.

The exhibition will feature a video documenting Iiyama's family's attempts to recreate her sister's auditory and visual hallucinations, as well as a video work and archival materials about medical records from a psychiatric hospital, all presented in an installation format.

Four works form the core of the exhibition. The exhibition features a video work titled "Going for a Nighttime Walk in Search of a Real Home," a slide show depicting a family of six embodying a scene seen through the eyes of the younger sister, "Visiting the Sea Kannon Bodhisattva with the Moomin Family," along with accompanying text and audio; a video work on the medical records (patient casebooks) of a former psychiatric hospital in Tokyo; and a small project examining a silent film made in Japan in 1926 from multiple perspectives. Each piece is sure to provoke viewers' feelings of confusion and discovery, as well as great joy and sadness.

In recent years, Iiyama has often used anonymous scrapbooks to explore historical events such as leprosy and the Great Kanto Earthquake. However, in this latest work, Iiyama draws on her personal experiences to express a world glimpsed by the artist while researching the history and cases of mental illness.

An opening reception will be held on the first day of the exhibition, the 13th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The venue is closed Tuesday through Thursday. Open from 5pm to 11pm on Mondays, and from 1pm to 7pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
