The redevelopment project for the Isetan Shinjuku store, which began in June last year with a phased remodeling of its sales floors, was completed on March 6th, marking its grand opening.
A ceremony was held before the store's grand opening, featuring architect Noritaka Tange, who handled the environmental design for the redevelopment, interior designer Yasumichi Morita, photographer Kishin Shinoyama, who created the opening key visual, contemporary artist Kohei Nawa, and model Mona, all present to cut the ribbon together with Taiyo Onishi, president of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings.
The remodeling concept was "the world's greatest fashion museum." The extensive renovation, which cost approximately 10 billion yen, included the creation of new promotional spaces called "parks" around the escalators on the second, third, and fourth floors of the main building, which were the subject of the remodeling. Each floor's park will host events with a different theme every one to two weeks. Between 1,500 and 2,000 promotions are planned for the year.
At the time of the opening, President Onishi said, "It was difficult to combine fashion and art, the visible and the invisible, but we will create a store that continues to evolve with the goal of becoming the best in Japan and the world." The sales target for the first year of the remodel is 215 billion yen (105% over the previous year).
