[2013-2014 AW Tokyo Collection] Anti-nuclear power! Hisui's thoughts on human evolution

Mar 20, 2013

On March 19th, HISUI presented its 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection in the form of an installation at the joint exhibition Roomslink. Designer Hiroko Ito's theme was "Intelligence to Adapt." Inspired by Darwin's "Origin of Species," the collection combined primitive elements with intelligence. Primitive elements were represented in tribal-patterned jacquard sweaters, orange-yellow colorways evocative of African tribes, and square-patterned knitwear. The silhouettes were shaped with tucks, symbolizing intelligence. Furthermore, a neatly tailored jacket was hand-sewn, incorporating a rough element into refinement. A printed long blouse featured a baroque pattern depicting explosions occurring around the world. Ito said, "Things like nuclear power made me question whether we have truly evolved. Isn't refining our primitive side to make it more intelligent the true meaning of human evolution?" The installation featured models that, when touched, would cause actions reminiscent of flames or nuclear meltdown.
