For Fall/Winter 2021, Paul Smith takes us on a journey through the subcultures that have marked his career, remixing icons of British fashion design for a new generation.
Following the brand's 50th anniversary celebrations, 2020, which saw unprecedented lockdowns forcing introspection, provided Paul Smith with time for deep reflection. 2021 has offered an opportunity to reset and rethink, resulting in new remixes of “Paul Smith classics”.

Key pieces are inspired by the various subcultural moments that have influenced Paul throughout his designs over the past 50 years. Tartan tailoring evokes The Specials, a two-tone British ska band formed in the late '70s and featuring Terry Hall as lead singer. Slack wool coats, sheepskins, and modernized donkey jackets speak to '80s New Romanticism. Mohair knitwear plays with Paul Smith's signature stripes, evoking a punk-preppy vibe. Silk pyjamas blend '70s psychedelia with the work-from-home vibe of 2021. These elements come together to create an eclectic "best of" collection—rediscovered classics repackaged for a new generation.

The colour palette is rich, wintry, with shades of green, purple and brown accented by more vibrant hues of lime, orange and pink. Floral prints offer a softer contrast to the utilitarian toughness of military jackets and heavy boots. Paul, a pioneer in introducing floral prints to men's fashion, continues to innovate through floral motifs, whether 3D printed on leather or woven into fabrics. A modern paisley pattern revives one of Paul Smith's signature patterns, while a Hawaiian print is reminiscent of the vintage shirts once sold in the brand's first Nottingham shop 50 years ago.

Styler Julian Ganio's father is a long-time client and friend of Paul's, and the fact that Julian has owned his father's "Paul Smith archive" for many years made him the perfect person to style the collection. Cast by Ben Grimes, the models who embody the "Paul Smith" characters each have their own unique personalities and interests, representing the Paul Smith customer today.
Director George Harvey captured the collection on film with his precise and refined eye. The music continues the "magpie approach", selecting highlights from many eras and genres. Imagine a vast record collection, lovingly culled and remixed to create something new.
