Photographer Shoji Ueda, whose 100th birthday will be celebrated on March 27, 2013, is holding an exhibition of his work, "Gazes toward the Origin," at Daikanyama T-Site until April 14.
Shoji Ueda was born in Tottori Prefecture in 1913. He graduated from the Oriental Photography School in 1932. In 1996, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France). He spent his entire life in his hometown of Tottori Prefecture until his death in 2000, photographing the beaches near his home and the Tottori Sand Dunes.
This exhibition displays a selection of his representative works, with a focus on collotype prints of "Warabe Goyomi" (Children's Calendar), a masterpiece from his mid-career. Museum merchandise from the Shoji Ueda Museum of Photography is also available.
Also, the venue will be exhibiting and selling over 10 related titles, including "Kako-chan Talks About the Photographs and Life of Shoji Ueda," a commemorative publication by Masutani Kazuko, Shoji Ueda's beloved daughter and the model for his "Famous Family Photographs," as well as out-of-print classics such as "Children's Calendar," "Best Single Photo Album: White Wind," "Sand Dunes," "Sand Dunes: Children's Four Seasons," "Soundless Memories," "Izumo," and "Shoji Ueda and His Friends."
