"VOCA Exhibition 2013" Ohara Museum of Art Award-winning young artist, Midori Sato, performs live painting at Isetan Shinjuku

Mar 22, 2013

In conjunction with the art fair currently being held in Tokyo, Isetan Shinjuku will be hosting a live painting event by young artists until March 24th.

The artist performing this live painting event is painter Midori Sato. Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1984, Sato graduated from the Western Painting Course of the Nagoya University of Arts' Department of Painting in 2008. While studying there, she studied abroad at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Dijon (France). In 2010, she completed her Master's program at the Tokyo Zokei University Graduate School of Art and Design. She is currently based in Nagoya.

Major solo exhibitions include Project N48 (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery Corridor, 2012) and "My Precious Room" (TKG Editions Kyoto, 2012), and in 2013 she participated in the group exhibition "Tokyo Painting II" (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum). In 2010, she received the Tomio Koyama Award at the Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2010. She also won the Ohara Museum of Art Award at the "VOCA 2013" exhibition, which runs until March 30th at the Ueno Royal Museum Gallery. Her works are inspired by beautiful clothes and shoes she sees in boutiques and magazines, as well as closets and shoe racks. Tomio Koyama, who discovered her work, said, "Her work is realistic, but her omissions are unique. Her color combinations are intricately intertwined and fascinating. I like her style of painting only the things she loves. I thought she was the perfect choice for a live painting event at Isetan." This will be her first live painting event, and she commented, "I'm a little nervous because it's my first time, but being surrounded by my favorite clothes and shoes really inspires me to create. I've already checked out the store beforehand, so I'd like to paint my closet, filled with my favorite clothes and shoes, on canvas." The live painting will take place at Global Closet on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku from Thursday, March 21st to Sunday, March 24th from 2pm to 5pm, with the completed works being exhibited on Monday, March 25th and Tuesday, March 26th.
