About Naomi Osaka: She is the first Asian to reach the world No. 1 singles ranking and the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam tournament. Her extraordinary achievements in tennis and her active career off the court have made her one of the world's most recognized athletes.
After turning professional in 2013, Osaka joined the WTA Tour. Despite being a rising star, she quickly captured the attention of fans and media with her powerful serve and strong forehand. In January 2016, she competed in her first Grand Slam tournament, successfully qualifying and reaching the third round in her first main draw appearance. That same year, she won the "WTA Newcomer of the Year" award at the 2016 WTA Awards. Two years later, in 2018, she achieved the remarkable feat of winning two consecutive Grand Slam titles, marking one of her strongest seasons. In 2020, she won her second US Open title, capturing global attention amid the looming pandemic and social unrest. In 2020, Osaka was named Sports Illustrated's "Athlete of the Year," Adweek's "Most Powerful Woman in Sports," and the highest-paid female athlete by Forbes. She was also named one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World." As a social activist, she has made bold statements highlighting social inequality in the United States, making her a force to reckon with both on and off the court. Born in Osaka to a Haitian-American father and a Japanese mother, Osaka immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of three. Currently residing in Los Angeles, California, she competes for Japan and is expected to be a key face of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
