Feb 2, 2013
Department store sales figures for January were announced on February 1st. Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings announced that sales at Mitsukoshi Isetan stores were 96.2% of the previous year's. While the postponement of the start of a highly anticipated sale from January 2nd to January 18th impacted sales during the New Year's sale, the Isetan Shinjuku flagship store achieved 120% of its budget for the three days from January 18th, surpassing the results for the three days from January 2nd to January 4th of the previous year. However, due to a reduction in sales floor space following renovations of the women's clothing floor and snowfall in the Kanto region, Isetan Shinjuku flagship store's sales (in-store basis) were 92.5% of the previous year's. Other stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area also saw lower sales than the previous year, with the exception of Isetan Tachikawa (101.9%), including Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi flagship store (98.5% in-store basis), Mitsukoshi Ginza store (98.9%), and others.

H2O Retailing's Hankyu Department Store Main Store, which had its grand opening in November last year after expanding, saw a 147.2% increase, exceeding the 140.7% increase in December, and the Hankyu Umeda Main Store alone, excluding Hankyu Men's Osaka, showed a high growth of 160.2%. Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores as a whole saw a 109.8% increase (113.9% on an existing store basis excluding Kobe Hankyu), and the company-wide total also exceeded the December growth.

J. Front Retailing's New Year's lucky bags were a hit, sales also remained strong, and high-priced items such as luxury brands and fine art jewelry performed well, with Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores as a whole seeing a 103.1% increase. By store, Daimaru Tokyo, which continues to benefit from floor space expansion, exceeded the previous year's figures at 132.5%, Daimaru Kobe at 104.3%, Daimaru Kyoto at 100.9%, and Matsuzakaya Nagoya at 100.4%. Daimaru Shinsaibashi at 96.9% and Daimaru Umeda at 95.9% were down from the previous year. The department store business, including affiliated department stores, saw a total of 102.6%, exceeding the previous year's results for the sixth consecutive month.

Although Takashimaya saw strong sales of high-priced items such as selected clothing and accessories and jewelry, due to factors such as snowfall in the Kanto region, sales at Takashimaya alone (14 stores) were 97.2%, and sales at 18 stores, including domestic department store subsidiaries, were 97.1%. By store, the Nihonbashi store was 96.7%, the Yokohama store 95.6%, the Shinjuku store 97.8%, and the Tamagawa store 96.5%, with all but the suburban Tachikawa store at 106.9% all being lower than the previous year, with 9 stores in the Kanto region at 96.6%.
