The fifth Think of Fashion event, a gathering focusing on fashion designers and discussing culture and social phenomena related to fashion, will be held on February 24th. The theme of the event is "A BATHING APE - Remix and Relaxation in the 1990s," and lectures will be given by fashion researcher Kengo Yoda, part-time lecturer Takuya Kikuta of Bunka Gakuen University, and moderator Riyo Takagi. A BATHING APE has built a unique street culture by incorporating not only fashion but also various fields such as film and music. Using the brand as a central focus, we will consider how taste-focused remix cultures such as "Shibuya-kei" and "Ura-Harajuku" influenced and shaped the culture of the 1990s.
Led by director NIGO, A BAPE, which started alongside Undercover in 1993 at NOWHERE in the backstreets of Harajuku, is a representative brand that led the Ura-Harajuku culture. Popular for its monkey camouflage pattern "BAPE Camo," the brand developed a wide range of products, from clothing to miscellaneous goods and household accessories. Each item was produced in extremely limited quantities, and long lines of young people would form at the store every weekend in search of them. In recent years, the boom has calmed down, and in 2011 the brand was acquired by the Hong Kong company I.T.
Think of Fashion has previously featured a mix of new and old brands, including Vivienne Westwood, Keisuke Kanda, Comme des Garçons, and Hatra.
