Photographer Masayoshi Sukita's David Bowie photo exhibition "TIME - David Bowie by Masayoshi Sukita" will be held on the first floor of Spiral Garden in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. The exhibition will run from December 4th to 9th.
Sukita has been photographing David Bowie for over 40 years and is also known for creating the album covers for "HEROES" and "TIN MACHINE." The cover image for "HEROES" was used as material for "THE NEXT DAY," the artist's first album in 10 years, released in 2013, and generated a lot of buzz.
Sukita's work was also prominently displayed at the David Bowie retrospective "David Bowie ls" held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in the UK. The exhibition is currently running in Chicago and is scheduled to travel to Paris and Melbourne in the future.
Unreleased works will also be on display at Spiral Garden. The exhibition captures a time between Sukita and Bowie never before seen. While everything has changed over the long span of 40 years, if we shift our perspective, we can see that "nothing has changed." It's fascinating to see how this reality is reflected in each of the works.
The exhibition is being designed by internationally acclaimed art director Hideki Nakajima. Using acrylic, a material that echoes the Becher School, a cutting-edge form of photography in Germany, the exhibition breathes new life into Sukita's work.
A talk show featuring Sukita and special guests is also scheduled during the exhibition.
