Photographer Masayoshi Sukita was born on May 5, 1938, in Fukuoka Prefecture. After graduating from the Japan Photography College in 1960, he studied under photographer Shisui Tanahashi. He worked as an advertising photographer, focusing on men's fashion, and his narrative work was highly acclaimed. In 1963, he won the APA Exhibition Chairman's Award for his stage photos of singer I. George. In 1965, he moved to Tokyo and joined Deltamond, where he was tasked with shooting advertisements for the men's brand "JAZZ." Around this time, Sukita also began shooting video footage, and in 1971, he served as cinematographer for the film "Throw Away Your Books, Go Out into the Streets." That same year, he won an ADC Award for the "JAZZ" TV commercial. In 1969, he was inspired by an outdoor concert he saw at Woodstock in the United States, and he became fascinated with subculture. He personally negotiated with artists like T. Rex and David Bowie, successfully capturing their images. After returning to Japan, he held a T.REX photo exhibition in Tokyo and accompanied David Bowie on his Japan tour in 1973. In 1977, a portrait of David Bowie taken in Harajuku was used as the cover image for the album "Heroes."
He has since followed musicians in Japan, including Y.M.O., Tomoyasu Hotei, and Kiyoshiro Imawano, creating album covers and photobooks for them. In 2010, he released the photobook "Y.M.O x SUKITA," and in 2012, he released "BOWIE x SUKITA Speed of Life," a collection of his 40 years of pursuing David Bowie. He also worked on the "TAKEO KIKUCHI" 2013 Spring/Summer campaign. He is also active in a wide range of fields, including television commercials and film.
