Espace Louis Vuitton's "Traces of Disappearance" exhibition explores the impermanence of all things. Gumi stained glass and a cage of peace

Jan 17, 2014

The ninth exhibition, "Traces of Disappearance," will open on January 18th at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Omotesando, Tokyo. A preview was held on the 16th.

This time, the exhibition features four group artists: Anne and Patrick Poirier, Kasper Kovits, Naoya Hatakeyama, and Yuan Guangming.

Two large, striking works stand out in the exhibition space. A towering, 7-meter-tall conical cage in the center is Poirier's installation, "The Soul of the World." Eight white doves, symbolizing peace, fly around inside, and words such as "hatred," "soul," "fragrance," "desire," "future," "meditation," and "transience" are inscribed on the floor surrounding the cone. "Transience is an image we've always used. The white dove symbolizes the soul and peace. But both are fleeting. The words on the floor, like this dove, are constantly flying through my mind," said the Poiriers.

Kovits's 7-meter-diameter stained-glass work, "The Sheer Size of It," is installed so as to illuminate the cone. Installed near the opening, the natural light pours colorful light into the venue. The work is made up of gummy candy. Approximately 120,000 pieces, weighing 380 kg, depict his vision of paradise like a miniature painting. Over time, they melt and deform with temperature, the colors blend, and heaven decays. "I was thinking about art from the afterlife. As I was creating the work, I began to think about the feeling of being overwhelmed, which is why I chose this size," Kovits said.

Hataeyama's photographic work, "Mont Ventoux," is exhibited around the entire floor. It's rare to see a photographic work exhibited in natural light. Yuan's video installation, "Disappearing Landscape - Reason to be a leaf," will be installed at the entrance to the venue, inside the Louis Vuitton shop on the first floor.

Curators Murielle Hladik and Eva Kraus said, "We wondered how we could materialize the passage of time. Everything changes with time. The world is fleeting, changes, decays, and decays. We chose artists who express these things poetically. We believe that a dialogue will be generated between the works themselves and with visitors."
