Mariko Mori's Energy Visualization Exhibition is currently being held at Louis Vuitton Omotesando

Sep 30, 2013

"Infinite Renew," an exhibition by New York-based Japanese artist Mariko Mori, opened at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Omotesando on September 28th. The exhibition features eight works (three of which were created with support from Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo) on the theme of "endless regeneration of energy." Regarding the exhibition, Mariko Mori said, "The 'Infinite Renew' exhibition attempts to re-examine the concept of the perpetual regeneration of energy. Each of the three-dimensional works featured here visualizes the systems inherent in our very existence through cyclic cosmology." The first thing that catches your eye upon entering the exhibition are three spiral sculptures. The spirals extend from the floor to the mirrored ceiling, as if stretching infinitely into outer space. This interactive piece features cameras and LED displays mounted on the ceiling that detect human movement, changing the light projected onto the spirals to purple and green.

Near the entrance to the venue, "Renew Sculpture I," "Renew Sculpture II," and the "Butterfly" sculpture series are on display, resembling a Möbius strip symbolizing reincarnation. "Butterfly" is a scaled-down version of the stage set from the opera "Madame Butterfly," which was shown at the Teatro La Fenice as a special project for the 2013 Venice Biennale, and represents the rebirth of Madame Butterfly's soul.

In a pocket-like area of the venue, "Birds II," representing the pair of birds that appeared in Madame Butterfly's dream, is placed. Although it may appear different from the other works, along with the animation "Alaya," which is based on personal experiences, this work is related to "something invisible." In conjunction with this exhibition, "Alaya" will be screened at Mori's solo exhibition "Rebirth: Recent Work by Mariko Mori," held at the Japan Society Gallery, an art gallery in New York, from October 11th to January 12th, 2014 (screening period: October 7th to October 13th).

Why not experience what Mariko Mori calls "the visualization of invisible energy" in a fantastical space that evokes the feeling of endless energy regeneration?
