On March 20th, designer Nobuyuki Nishizaki's Ujoh held its Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection show at Shibuya Hikarie. Drawing on tailoring techniques, the brand explored new possibilities and value in patterns. Nishizaki described this process as "beautifully and carefully breaking down the construction of clothing." Tailored coats and jackets were cut off and reborn as newly structured garments, connected with snap buttons and straps. Classic checks and washed organza embroidered with wallpaper-like patterns appeared through the cuts as the models walked. Under a coat adorned with generous, luxurious fur detailing on the sleeves, a shirt dress and pants were paired for an effortlessly chic look. A loose-gauge knit with an oversized silhouette gently hugged the body and bold slits on the sides allowed a dressy long skirt to sway with the model's steps. Sporty elements accented the look throughout. The stripes running down the sides of the pants, the shark-soled platform shoes, and the striped socks by Ayame, a legwear brand known for its unique creativity, breathed a fresh new air into the look. Classic yet modern, elegant yet sporty. The silhouettes are both lean and wide. Though the look is unbalanced, it fits comfortably to the body and enhances the wearer's presence—a feat borne of the designer's solid tailoring skills, a testament to his background as a pattern maker. Ujoh has also been gaining attention overseas, holding a show at Milan Fashion Week. "I'm creating clothes with a positive attitude, but I need to grow and develop further in order to expand overseas. I think my brand needs to be open to new challenges," says Nishizaki. As one of Japan's leading designers, his future is sure to be exciting.
