Singer-songwriter Björk was born on November 21, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Her parents divorced when she was one year old, and she was introduced to music through her guitarist stepfather. She began attending music classes at age five. At age 11, she signed with a record company and released the album "Björk." She enjoyed explosive popularity in Iceland, but, influenced by punk, she focused on bands in her late teens.
In 1986, she married guitarist Thor Eldon and gave birth to a son that June. Shortly after giving birth, she formed the guitar pop band "The Sugarcubes" and starred in her first starring role in the film "The Juniper Tree." The Sugarcubes toured the world and even visited Japan.
In 1993, she released her solo album "Debut," followed by "Post," which was a worldwide hit. Her 1997 album "Homogenic" was nominated for a Grammy Award and garnered critical acclaim. In 2000, she starred in the film "Dancer in the Dark," winning Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. She frequently collaborates with Japanese artists, including participating in accordionist coba's world tour and having Eiko Ishioka direct a music video. She is a self-proclaimed fan of photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, whose portraits she used on her album covers and also appeared in his documentary film "Arakimentari." She's a fashionista, often wearing Comme des Garçons, Three as Four, Bernhard Willhelm, and Alexander McQueen in her live performances and music videos. In July of this year, she performed at the Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation), her first visit to Japan in five years, wearing outfits designed by London-based Japanese designer Maiko Takeda.
