Mame, the brand created by designer Maiko Kurokawa, has presented its Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection. The theme of the collection is "TIMELESS." Following on from last season, Kurokawa traveled to the northern region featured in the novel of the same name by author Mariko Asabuki. There, she was captivated by the ethnic costumes, dance costumes, and wedding accessories, as well as the colorful fabrics and threads used in their decorations and the rough handiwork. These details were then incorporated into the collection. The descriptions from the novel and the scenery she witnessed in the northern region—the colors of the sky where sunsets and fog intertwine, the vibrant colors of the hearth fires, and the petal-like snowflakes—are translated into an antique-inspired color palette of sax blue, cardinal red, iris, lavender gray, and ivory. The signature prints on jacquard dresses and jackets feature classic landscapes, evoking an exotic charm. Traditional details scattered throughout the collection—the distinctive sleeve lines, braided buttons, and vibrant lining colors reminiscent of a kimono's hakama—combine like a musical instrument, creating a sensual yet modern melody. The skillful use of materials throughout the collection is also striking. Iridescent dresses feature delicately embroidered organza sleeves, while ribbed knitwear is accented with satin cuffs for a rhythmic effect. Furthermore, graphic motifs found in Hokkaido's northern folk costumes are transformed into soft, comfortable knit pullovers, coats, and dresses. Straw craft details reminiscent of the straw raincoat and hat worn by the Namahage of Akita Prefecture are beautifully embodied in an intricately patterned overcoat. "Important things never change. I want to create clothes that are like an accumulation of memories," says designer Kurokochi. A journey inspired by the world of novels led her to trace the history and scenery of the northern region, adding a new chapter to the brand's story.
