Chanel Ginza renovated into a space filled with contemporary art

Nov 26, 2013

The Chanel Ginza boutique opened in 2004 on Ginza Chuo-dori 3-chome. The building, which attracted attention for its spatial and architectural design by internationally renowned architect Peter Marino, featured images of tweed and the C logo projected onto the building's front wall, adding a striking touch to the Ginza skyline. The Ginza store was slowly renovated, with one floor per year: the first floor in 2011, the second floor in 2012. The third floor has now been renovated, and the store reopened on November 22, 2013. Visitors to the third floor are greeted by a pearl necklace-inspired piece by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. The chic object, made of a string of Italian Murano glass beads, gradually changes color from silver to black. His work, reminiscent of Chanel's iconic pearl necklace, is exhibited in select Chanel stores, including London's New Bond Street store and Paris's Avenue Montaigne store. A mini library near Ginza's Chuo-dori street features bookshelves where visitors can freely browse books related to Coco Chanel. This bronze bookshelf, featuring a circular motif, is the work of female sculptor Ingrid Donat. Her work is also used as a showcase in the central salon. The modern interior, based on Chanel's signature colors of white, black, and beige, creates a nostalgic atmosphere that transcends time and space, transporting visitors to the era in which Mademoiselle lived. The ready-to-wear floor is divided into three sections by brown resin arches. The central ready-to-wear corner is currently showcasing the Cruise Collection, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mademoiselle's opening of her first boutique in Deauville, France. The collection includes items brimming with Mademoiselle's spirit, including cashmere jersey sets inspired by men's wardrobes, iconic pearl long necklaces, camellias, and two-tone shoes. Two VIP rooms are also available, featuring photographs of the Eiffel Tower by Karl Lagerfeld and etchings by public art pioneer Richard Serra, creating a relaxing shopping experience. The store's renovation also highlights the elegant hospitality of its interiors, featuring art pieces personally selected by Peter Marino, including works by calligrapher Rie Kawabe, which have been on display since the store's opening. Next year, the Chanel Ginza store will celebrate its 10th anniversary, and it appears ready to write a new chapter in its history.
