Chanel Ginza presents Sabine Pigalle's series for the first time in Japan, combining painting and photography

Nov 19, 2013

CHANEL Nexus Hall in Tokyo's Ginza district will present its first photography exhibition of 2014, showcasing Paris-based artist Sabine Pigalle's series "TIMEQUAKES: Overlap of Time," for the first time in Japan. The exhibition will run from January 17 to February 9, 2014. The inspiration for the series was the chaos Pigalle experienced during the Great East Japan Earthquake. She combined court portraits from the 15th to 17th centuries with contemporary portraits, integrating them with abstract photographs of Tokyo taken during her multiple stays in Japan. She also appropriates the works of Raphael and Da Vinci, adding detailed details. Regarding her work, Pigalle states, "Through the biases of borrowing and appropriation, I have striven to create optical illusions that combine the power and density of the illusion of reality and fiction. My paintings are faithful to the workings of memory, deceptively clear, and truly illicit." Pigalle was born in Paris in 1963. After studying literature at the Sorbonne, he entered the world of fashion photography and worked as an assistant to German photographer Helmut Newton for four years. He then moved into figurative photography, creating works that explore a wide range of themes, including the history of painting, religion, mythology, and personal fears. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2006, and in 2009 exhibited at the "No Man's Land" exhibition held in the former French Embassy building. He is represented by Louise-Alexander Gallery.
