Yuko Nagayama's architecture exhibition. Introducing projects by Tadanori Yokoo, Tabaimo, and Yoriko Hoshi

Nov 8, 2013

Architect Yuko Nagayama's exhibition "The Future Begins with Architecture - Teshima x Yokoo Tadanori, Uwajima x Tabaimo x Hoshi Yoriko" is currently running at EYE OF GYRE, an art space within GYRE in Omotesando, Tokyo. It runs until November 24th. Admission is free.

The exhibition uses video, photography, and architectural models to introduce two art projects around the Seto Inland Sea that Nagayama worked on this summer. Aiming to revitalize the region through the energy of architecture and art, it presents a vision for these much-talked-about projects, which seek to create new communities.

The first, "Teshima Yokoo House," features 11 two-dimensional works by contemporary artist Tadanori Yokoo, including "Primitive Universe," as well as installations in the circular tower and garden, creating a museum integrated with the architecture. Another exhibit from "AT ART UWAJIMA 2013" will introduce an art project renovating Kiya Ryokan, a long-established inn in Uwajima founded in 1911 and known for having hosted writer Ryotaro Shiba and others. Some of the tatami mats were replaced with acrylic panels, and videos created by contemporary artist Tabaimo based on novels written by manga artist Yoriko Hoshi were projected onto the transoms, walls, and ceiling. Other exhibits will include a renovation project for a stationery store in Uwajima's arcade, and a participatory exhibition on creating an ideal town. A talk show titled "The Possibilities of Architecture and Art" featuring Nagayama and Tabaimo will be held on November 17th during the event, hosted by Yoshiko Ikoma of Art Dynamics. Related merchandise will also be available for purchase. The items on offer include Hoshi Yoriko's novel "That's How It Continues Forever" (700 yen), written for "AT ART UWAJIMA 2013," the "Uwajima T-shirt" (2,500 yen) designed by Tabaimo, and original limited edition products made with "Repearl," a pearl that can be revived after it has been turned into jewelry, supervised by Hoshi Yoriko, Tabaimo, and Nagayama Yuko.
