This summer, a new art project, "AT ART UWAJIMA 2013," will kick off in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, on July 24th.
The project, which marks 400 years since the founding of the Date clan, feudal lords of the Edo period, in 2015, aims to convey the charm of Uwajima, known for its Ushi-oni Festival and bullfighting, to future generations and create a new culture.
The first part of the project will be an exhibition featuring seven creators, held from July 24th to August 22nd at two venues: Kiya Ryokan, founded in 1911, and SITUATIONALLY in Uwajima Kisaiya Arcade, the venue for the Ushi-oni Festival. The exhibition will be based on the themes of "private (= inn)" and "public (= arcade)." In 2012, at the request of local company Kisaiya Uwajima, Transit General Office, working with architect Yuko Nagayama, renovated Kiya Ryokan into a new accommodation facility. The inn will exhibit "Kiya no Sumi," a triple collaboration between Yuko Nagayama, manga artist Yoriko Hoshi, known for "Kyou no Nekomura-san," and contemporary artist Tabaimo. Artist Akira Fujimoto (Reverse Project) and the NPO SO-EN, a group of local Uwajima volunteers, renovated a closed stationery store and a vacant lot to serve as their base of operations. "SITUATIONALLY," organized by Sakie Takasu, will host an exhibition titled "Side Core." Works by sculptor Ryotaro Abe, climber and contemporary artist Ryota Kikuchi, and contemporary artists Taihei Kimura and Takahiro Komuro will be on display.
