More than 30 years after his heyday in the 1980s, couturier Azzedine Alaia still has many admirers around the world, and despite not consistently releasing works since the 1990s, he continues to receive high praise.
A major retrospective of this legendary designer is being held at the recently renovated Musée Galliera.
Born in Tunisia, Alaia began designing clothes before moving to France in the mid-1950s, and his career spans nearly 60 years. As a pioneer of form-fitting, body-conscious dresses, he continues to inspire countless creators. Among the works on display, you can find many masterpieces that will surely feature in the history of Western fashion. The exhibition features 70 memorable pieces, including the bustier that made Alaïa famous when worn by Naomi Campbell, the gingham dress created in collaboration with Tati department store, the hooded dress worn by Grace Jones at the French fashion festival Oscar de la Mode, and the crimson dress worn by Rihanna at the 55th Grammy Awards. It also shows how Alaïa's techniques have influenced current fashion, and how his creations, even if they are from a different era, remain modern. A flagship store (5 Rue de Marignan 75008 Paris), stocking the full line, has also opened to coincide with the exhibition.
